Win Hill - getting its name from the Saxon period, when there was a battle between Wessex and Northumbria. Northumbria on Win Hill and Wessex on Lose Hill. Judging by the names i’m sure you can guess the outcome. This beautiful hill is just north of Bamford and has a distinctive shape which can be seen from afar. A steep ascent through woodland will find you onto the gritstone summit alongside a trig point. Overlooking the heart of the Peak District, full 360 panoramic views, truly an incredible location and one of my favourites. The display of heather here is spectacular and easily one of the best ti have ever seen.
This is perfect for sunset in late summer when the heather is in bloom as the whole landscape lights up pink/purple. The winding path on the other side leads you straight into the sun going down behind the great ridge.
There are a couple of routes to get here, I will provide directions to free roadside parking and paid parking where we will begin the walk. The walk starts crossing over lady bower reservoir, a good opportunity to capture the plug holes - although at this time of year it’s unlikely they will be overflowing. The ascent begins from there, through woodland with steep steps, in some areas the steps have corroded and require a small amount of scrambling. It is steep, depending on your fitness we may take a couple of breaks on the way up. It usually takes 45 minutes to get to the top.
I will talk through how your camera work with advice on settings depending on the scenario. How to guide the viewers eye to the focal point, how to simplify the scene . Other methods will be discussed such as bracketing, focus stacking. All different techniques ranging from beginner to advanced.
